We can't try and explain what Burning Man is, other than to tell you it's where 50,000 people gather together in Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community. It challenges partakers to express themselves and rely on themselves to an extent that is not normally encountered in a person's day-to-day.
Black Rock Desert is in Nevada, in the United States from August 27th to September 3rd. Because of the event's harsh environment and remote location, participants are responsible for their own subsistence.
Participants are encouraged to express themselves throughout the event through various art forms and projects. The community is encouraged to work with and help fellow Burning Man goers. All who come are spurred to experience who and what is around them and to explore their inner selves and their part in the event. The "Leave no trace" policy is big with burning man, as the stayers are expected to not have a negative impact on the environment.
The event has grown from 20 participants in 1986 to 53,000 in 2011. They must be on to something good!

Have a read of this essay by a participant of 'Burning Man'. It may give you a deeper insight into the ins and outs of the community and it's ideals.
